Currently the main mechanism for energy efficiency is the NatHERS energy rating system developed by the CSIRO. This method is a prediction on how energy efficient a home will be based on a simulation of the drawings, orientation and the materials to be used in the construction. All homes need to achieve 6 stars before building is commenced. At the end of the project there is no testing or modelling to prove that it actually is energy efficient. A blower door airtightness test is the perfect way to bridge this gap. Setting a permeability requirement for your home enables you to have evidence based proof, in the form of a blower door test, that your homes is the best quality and highest efficiency it can be.
